The Christmas Cactus
The Christmas Cactus, scientifically known as Schlumbergera truncata, is a tropical plant native to Brazil. It gets its name from the fact that it typically blooms around Christmastime. The plant is easily recognizable by its oval-shaped leaves which are green and scalloped along the edges. Although the Christmas Cactus can tolerate some direct sunlight, it prefers bright indirect light and consistent moisture. When watering your Christmas Cactus, make sure to allow the top few inches of soil to dry out in between waterings.
The Thanksgiving Cactus
The Thanksgiving Cactus, which is also known as Schlumbergera Buckleyi, is very similar in appearance to the Christmas Cactus. In fact, they are often confused with one another! The main difference lies in their leaf shape – while the Christmas Cactus has oval-shaped leaves, the Thanksgiving Cactus has pointed leaves. Like its counterpart, the Thanksgiving Cactus is native to Brazil and prefers bright indirect light and moist soil. When watering your Thanksgiving Cactus, be sure to wait until the top inch or two of the soil is dry before watering again.
The Easter Cactus
The Easter Cactus, otherwise known as Rhipsalidopsis gaetneri, is not actually closely related to either of the other two holiday cacti – despite looking very similar! It is native to Brazil and Paraguay and typically blooms around Eastertime (hence its name). The Easter Cactus has flattened stems with oblong segments and brittle roots. When watering your Easter Cactus, make sure to wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again; too much moisture can cause root rot.
All three of these beautiful plants make great additions to any home during the holiday season! With their festive colors and unique appearances, they are sure to bring some holiday cheer into your home. And best of all, they are all easy plants to take care of! Just remember that each plant has different watering needs, so do your research before you purchase one.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from all of us here at The Christmas Season!
